Bonjour! Thank you for taking the time to view my profile. I am Shane Bonsujet, an abstract/naive artist based in Melbourne. I'm self taught and create bright, bold and colorful works. I was born in Zimbabwe and grew up there until the age of 14 when me and my family moved to Australia. Both my parents are Mauritian
In my early years I took a liking to painting wildlife and drawing cartoons. This quickly grew into a love for illustration, neo-expressionism and naive art and this forms the basis of my work. I draw inspiration from many sources. Knowledge, memories, thoughts and life experiences allow me an endless supply of reference. I'm passionate about music, self development and growth, history and culture as well as trauma healing and love. This shows in my work as i've just about painted everything from Marcus Aurelius, Maya Angelou, Kurt Cobain down to Balenciaga and Ludovico Einaudi. Im constantly absorbing and learning form the greatest teacher of all, life.
My work can best be described as simple techniques with complex ideas or the other way around. I embrace imperfection and painting is an intuitive but cathartic process for me. I plug in my headphones and just feel what takes place. I love colour, the complexity of its use and application, colour matching/contrasting, negative space, restraint or freedom and use this to capture the emotion of any piece. I use mark making and script/words to tell the story and direction of my works. My work is not consistent about any one specific theme but i'm an over thinker and have often painted about social issues, ethnicity and identity and depression to more light hearted subject matter. Art is therapy for me and im healing myself one painting at a time. I mainly work with acrylic paints as the foundation with oil sticks on top for the detail. I will often recycle canvas from op shops or recycle centres and paint over.
I've exhibitied in Melbourne and sold works interstate QLD, VIC, ACT, NSW as well as internationally NYC and NC and am slowly gaining interest with Bluethumb collectors. I have no expectations that anyone will like or even buy my art but i hope to keep things interesting and always love to challenge myself. Good vibes to you all.
